How to install metal garden edging at home for lawns and planting beds

Installing DIY lawn edging in your garden can be a challenging but very rewarding project. There can be lots of questions but actually its super simple and can give a premium finish to your garden that can last for years, keeping everything in place and creating a beautiful garden for you to enjoy.

Installing DIY lawn edging in your garden can be a challenging but very rewarding project. There can be lots of questions but actually its super simple and can give a premium finish to your garden that can last for years, keeping everything in place and creating a beautiful garden for you to enjoy.

How to install metal garden edging at home for lawns and planting beds

Tools required – you will need a mallet, spade, string (or hose), and maybe a block of wood.

Ground preparation

• mark out where you want the landscape edging to go and visualise it using the strong or hose
• once you are happy, use spray paint to mark it out and then use a spade to dig out a small trench or slot along the edge of the line. You can do this by simply digging in your spade and then joggle it backwards and forwards to increase the size of the slot.  In soft ground, the trench should be around 1-2cm less that the height of the edging for a flush finish.
• you need to have make sure there is nothing in the way for the metal edging to go – either work round it or remove it.

How does the edging come?

• Garden edging normally comes in 2-3m lengths with the ability to overlap or join the lengths together using a connecting piece
• It will be delivered flat but will be flexible enough to create all kinds of shapes and curves you require around your lawn and borders.

Laying the edging

• Make sure you start at the end that is going to be more visible or prominent as you will want to make sure you don't have any cuts here.
• Lay the first metal edging strip into the ground and make sure it is in the correct position, with the correct side facing into the garden, before gently pushing it into the soil and slotting the fixing stakes or pins into place.  If the edging is not low enough you can put a protective block of wood on top and then hit it down using the mallet.  Once it is in the desired location, simply drive the fixings into the ground until they are flush with the top of the edging, securing the edging into place.
• You can then continue with the next edging piece, and so on, making sure each edging strip is connected together securely.

Creating curves

• Normally curved lawn edges can be created easily using the flexible ExcelEdge metal edging however if the curve is particularly tight then you can preform it yourself by laying it flat on the lawn, treading on one, or using a heavy weight if you have one, and then lifting the other end up to flex to the required shape.

Straight lines

• If you have any long straight lines that you are looking to edge then we would recommend that you use a string line to keep you

Corners

• If you have any corners in your design, it is recommended that you don't try and join two metal edging lengths at a corner because the pressure can cause them to come apart leaving an unsightly gap.  Creating edging corners with metal edging is done very simply by marking out where the corner needs to be and then scoring the inside of the corner using a hacksaw. You can then use a hard, flat object such as a piece of wood or a brick to hold down against one side of the corner while lifting the other side to form the corner.  This can then be laid and installed in the same way as the standard edging lengths.

Backfilling and finishing

• Once all the landscape edging is all in place you can then backfill the edging to make sure all the fixings are hidden and tamp this down with your feet or a piece of wood to make sure the surfaces are all securely in place.
• You now have a beautiful neat and maintenance-free edge to your lawn or flower-bed which you can enjoy for years to come.
